With a super-stylized take on genre fiction, Zack Snyder has built an incredible resume that ranges from blockbuster horror like Dawn of the Dead to epic comic book adaptations like 300 and Watchmen to the intense family fare of Legend of the Guardians. Now, with this Friday’s release of Sucker Punch, Snyder offers his most original foray into hyperbolic filmmaking.
Emily Browning stars as Babydoll, a young woman who, forced into a mental institution by her abusive stepfather, retreats into a multi-faceted fantasy that casts her fellow inmates — Rocket (Jenna Malone), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) — as, on one tier, burlesque dancers and, on another, mythical warriors facing all manner of legendary opponents (including robots, samurai, zombies and orcs).
ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to speak with the full cast of the film (which also includes Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac), alongside Snyder himself to discuss the larger-than-life scale of Sucker Punch, the schizophrenic blend of action, musical, science fiction, fantasy and martial arts epic as well as the the ultimate importance of unrestrained creativity.
