Lee Young-Ae, as Cha Se-Eum, used to be a passionate violinist. For some reason, she gave up that dream and is now a successful conductor. She has returned to South Korea after 20 years to lead the orchestra at The Hankang Philharmonic.

The K-drama follows her struggles related to her personal and professional lives. While starting afresh in South Korea, she must overcome her past demons.

Maestra: Strings of Truth release date, cast & more

Maestra: Strings of Truth will premiere on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 9.20 pm KST on tvN. It will also stream on Disney Plus.

Directed by Kim Jeong-Kwon, the K-drama will consist of 12 episodes. New episodes will air on Saturdays and Sundays every week.

Hong Jung-Hee is the writer of Maestra: Strings of Truth. The main cast includes Lee Young-Ae as Cha Se-Eum, Lee Mu-Saeng as Yoo Jung-Jae, and Kim Young-Jae as Kim Pil. The remaining actors are Hwang Boreumbyeol, Park Ho-San, Yang Joon-Mo, Jin Ho-Eun, Lee Jung-Yeol, Lee Si-Won, Kim Min-Kyu, Jin So-Yeon, Han Jin-Hee, Hwang Gun, Lee Byung-Joon, Lim Se-Joo, Jeong Dong-Hwan, Ye Soo-Jung, Kim Young-Ah, Kang Ji-Eun, Choi Yoon-So, and Kim Hyeon-Jun.

The upcoming series is the remake of the French TV series Philharmonia. During a promotional event for tvN, Lee Young-Ae said, “The character looked very appealing to me as an actor since there has been no Korean TV series that shines the spotlight on a maestra, not that I know of. Plus, the storyline is fascinating.”

She reportedly learned violin and conducted an orchestra from professionals for her role. According to the director, the actors in the orchestra practiced “extremely hard” for their roles.

What is the Maestra: Strings of Truth plot?

Maestra: Strings of Truth is a thriller musical drama revolving around world-known conductor Cha Se-Eum. She wanted to become a famous violinist but became an orchestra conductor. Her fame brings her to South Korea after 20 years.

Se-Eum takes the job at The Hankang Philharmonic to lead the orchestra. While her talent and personality leave an impression on everybody, she has to deal with a former boyfriend and an overly dependent husband. The series’ trailer teases the backstory of Se-Eum and her ex-lover, Yoo Jung-Jae. He is still in love with her. The previews also hinted at an unhappy marriage between Se-Eum and her husband, Kim Pil.

The K-drama also deals with a murder mystery. A tragedy strikes in her orchestra, and she must find the truth. Things get more complicated when her past demons begin to affect her present.

The official synopsis of Maestra: Strings of Truth reads, “A highly accomplished conductor decides to leave her life in New York behind to take up the challenge of reviving a struggling orchestra.”

In the K-drama teaser, Se-Eum is asked, “What does the stage mean to you, Cha Sae-Eum?” She replies, “It’s a battlefield. Very ruthless and competitive.” Lee Young-Ae’s character adds that she will bring her orchestra at The Hankang Philharmonic to the top, even if it may risk her career.

Maestra: Strings of Truth will air on Saturdays and Sundays on Disney Plus and tvN.
