Manjummel Boys Song ‘Kanmani Anbodu’: Ilaiyaraaja Sends Legal Notice

Manjummel Boys, the latest Malayalam survival drama, scripted history. Not only in the theaters, but the movie also did well on OTT. Based on a real-life incident, the film left everyone in awe of the thrilling experience of the group of young boys stuck in an extreme circumstance. Despite being a Malayalam movie, it is often referenced to Kamal Haasan’s Tamil blockbuster Guna. As the movie also used the track ‘Kanmani Anbodu’ from the Tamil film, composed by Ilaiyaraaja, the music maestro has sent a legal notice to its makers.

For the unversed, the survival drama is based on an incident in 2006 at the Guna Caves of Kodaikanal. The real-life Manjummel boys visited the caves after watching Kamal Haasan’s movie when the accident happened. Throughout the film, ‘Kanmani Anbodu’ is heard in the background, paying homage to the Tamil film. However, it seems that the makers did not seek permission from Ilaiyaraaja to use the track.

According to a report by India Today, Ilaiyaraaja has sent a legal notice to the makers of Manjummel Boys. The music maestro has claimed copyright infringement and asked the makers to seek proper permission to use the song. Otherwise, they are asked to remove the track from the film. However, the makers have not commented on the notice yet.

Soubin Shahir, who plays a pivotal role in Manjummel Boys produced the film under his banner of Parava Films.

Ilaiyaraaja recently sent a similar notice to director Lokesh Kanagaraj. The director allegedly used the song ‘Va Va Pakkam Va’ from the 1983 movie Thanga Magan in the teaser of Rajinikanth’s Coolie. Ilaiyaraaja’s team had asked him to seek proper permission or remove the track from the clip.

For the unversed, the makers of Manjummel Boys recently faced another lawsuit. The makers were sued by an investor who alleged he did not receive the promised return from the film.
