Aavesham’s Fahadh Faasil Reveals Malayalam Cinema Lacks OTT Platforms’ Support

Fahadh Faasil, the acclaimed actor recently seen in the Malayalam blockbuster film Aavesham, shed light on a pressing issue plaguing the industry – the lack of robust support from OTT platforms. Despite the exponential growth of the Malayalam film trade, Faasil highlighted a persistent challenge: the absence of solid backing from online streaming giants.

Aavesham’s Fahadh Faasil on Malayalam cinema’s struggles with OTT release

The Malayalam industry has recently been delivering one blockbuster after another. From Manjummel Boys and Premalu to Aadujeevitham and Bramayugam, all of these films have received widespread acclaim nationwide. However, according to Aavesham’s actor Fahadh Faasil, the industry has to do much bidding to strike a deal with streaming giants.

“We need to release the film, prove the film, and then… I think that way we are more self-sufficient now. We understand the importance of making a film that is different and will make noise,” said Fahadh Faasil. Overall, highlighted the unique challenges faced by Malayalam filmmakers.

Unlike other film industries where OTT deals are secured well before production commences, Malayalam films often struggle to land a streaming platform even after a successful theatrical run. Fahadh Faasil pointed out that over 80 percent of films from other Indian film industries secure OTT deals effortlessly, showcasing the glaring discrepancy faced by Malayalam cinema.

The struggle for OTT recognition is evident even in the case of blockbuster hits. For example, Manjummel Boys, despite its tremendous box office success, faced hurdles in securing an OTT deal.

However, amidst the challenges, there are glimmers of hope. The OTT rights for Aavesham have been reportedly acquired by Amazon Prime Video, signalling a potential shift in the tide. Until then, viewers can watch his latest release currently playing in nearby theatres.
