After the success of Premalu, Mamitha Baiju’s political drama Rebel (2024) hit the silver screen on March 22, 2024. The film, set in Munnar, is about the societal issues Tamil students face amongst the Malayalam-speaking population. Here is everything you need to know about Rebel – storyline, cast, and more.

Rebel 2024 release date, plot, cast, runtime & more

Rebel is about the struggle faced by students due to language division between states. In addition to Mamitha Baiju, the film also stars G.V. Prakash Kumar, Venkatesh V.P., Adithya Bhaskar, and Karunas in pivotal roles. Rebel is written and directed by debutant Nikesh RS. The film hit the theatres on March 22, 2024.

Additionally, the music of Rebel is composed by Prakash Kumar. Pappanadu C Udhayakumar created the artwork, and Vetre Krishnan edited the film. Rebel witnessed a solo release in Tamil Nadu, with no significant box office competitor. The action drama thriller is reportedly based on a collection of true events.

The trailer of Rebel begins with a love story of a Tamil boy, Prakash, and a Malayalee girl, Mamitha, set in the 1980s. However, it takes a turn when the protagonist raises his voice in defense of his mother tongue. The film promises a blend of action and romance. Rebel also marks Mamitha’s Tamil debut. As per IMDb, the action-thriller has a run time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Mamitha Baiju’s upcoming movie OTT release date, platform & more

As Rebel hits theatre, speculations are rife about its OTT release. However, the makers have not revealed any updates about the film’s OTT partner. As per the trend, Rebel’s OTT release depends on its box office performance. Generally, if the action-thriller does well, fans can expect the OTT release 45-60 days after its theatrical release. However, it entirely depends on the filmmaker’s choice, so fans can anticipate an earlier streaming of Rebel.

Talking about the film’s storyline, director Nikesh said, “I had written a couple of stories, but I was not 100 percent satisfied. I am from Munnar, and when I saw the issues that people there face, I got into this subject for Rebel. After hearing the stories of what my relatives went through, I was able to collect the details and make it into a film story.”

Nikesh also added that Rebel is based on true events. He said, “I have heard many stories of what people have felt and experienced. Rebel is a story formed from the collective experience and creative liberty for a cinematic experience.”

He added, “There are a lot of Malayalam dialogues in the film, and I was skeptical if they would be understood. But after Manjummel Boys, Tamil audiences could understand Malayalam and enjoy it. That is a huge boost to Rebel.”

It will be interesting to see how well Rebel will perform on its opening day at the box office. The action thriller is currently showing in your nearby theaters.
