How will Bollywood make it?: Diljit Dosanjh on Amar Singh Chamkila

The upcoming Netflix release, scheduled for April 12, 2024, explores the life of the iconic Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. His remarkable journey was tragically cut short at the age of 27. Diljit, essaying a pivotal role alongside Parineeti Chopra, confessed to having reservations about how Bollywood would handle the delicate subject matter.

He revealed, “When I got to know that a Bollywood film is being made on Chamkila, I thought what (kind) of film will they make. We have made a fictional film Jodi, as we didn’t have the rights. We also wondered how they would make Punjabi songs in Hindi as we can’t recreate it, as we had already made it.”

However, fate took a turn during the pandemic-induced hiatus when Imtiz Ali reached out to Diljit with an unexpected proposition. “I was taken aback when Imtiaz sir contacted me. Initially, I feared legal repercussions, but to my surprise, he offered me a role in his project,” Diljit recalled.

Additionally, what turned the tide for Diljit Dosanjh was the filmmaker’s unique vision for the biopic. “When I heard his perspective, it was completely different. It was a film about Chamkila. I felt I didn’t know Chamkila,” he remarked. Imtiaz’s distinct approach showcased Chamkila as a singer and a multifaceted artist who wrote, composed, and sang his own songs.

Hence, upon realizing certain things he wasn’t aware of before cemented his decision to star in Netflix’s Amar Singh Chamkila.

Amar Singh Chamkila is gearing up to release on the streaming giant on April 12, 2024.
