The latest Malayalam survival thriller Manjummel Boys is currently having its dream run in the theaters. Chidambaram has directed the film which has created quite a stir among the viewers since its release. From survival to friendship, the film has touched various notions and amazed everyone. While the movie had the viewers on the edge of their seats, it had a bittersweet ending. Scroll down for a detailed explanation of the movie and its ending based on a true story.

Manjummel Boys begins with the introduction of a group of young men from an arts club in Cochin. They decide to go on a trip to Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, unaware of the lurking danger. During their trip, one of the friends told them about Guna Caves, the place where Kamal Haasan’s film Guna was filmed. Guna Caves are also known as Devil’s Kitchen for their shape and dangerous location.

How does Subhash fall into the caves?

As the group reaches Guna Caves, they decide to explore the restricted areas. Upon reaching a point in the restricted areas, they decide to leave a stamp of their friendship behind. When they write “Manjummel Boys” on the rocks in the caves, Subhash decides to add “2006” to their carving. As he tries to reach the carving, he falls inside the cave. When his friends realize he has fallen down, they cry out his name. At first, they think Subhash is parking them, but they soon understand the gravity of the situation. They see no sight of Subhash and a few of them run to seek help.

Some of the friends go to the local shop at the entrance of the Guna Caves and seek help. As the shop owner hears about Subhash, he tells them that nobody returned alive from such a situation. At his daughter’s request, the shopkeeper accompanies them to the caves.

On the other hand, a few friends go to the nearby town to inform the police. When the rest of the Manjummel Boys are told that Subhash must be dead, they refuse to believe it. Even the police accuse them of plotting Subhash’s death as an accident and take them into their custody. When the police suggest the boys leave Subhash and return home, they are adamant about saving him. As a result, everyone finally hears Subhash crying in the deep hole and the rescue mission begins.

Do Manjummel Boys Save Subhash?

When the police say they do not have any plan, Kuttan decides to go down inside the caves and bring Subhash out. Despite the police officers being reluctant to this plan, Kuttan is determined to help his friend. After sending him about 120 feet below the caves, they run out of rope. The police warn Kuttan about the lack of oxygen but he insists they lower him a bit more.

Finally, Kuttan sees Subhash covered in blood lying on a ledge. As he reaches him, Subhash chokes Kuttan out of trauma. Their friends are then successful in retrieving them. After receiving the necessary treatment, the Manjummel Boys return to Kerala.

While they decide not to tell their families about the horrific incident, they tell Subhash’s mother that he was injured in a waterfall. Subhash’s mother scolds Kuttan for forcing him to go on the trip. When the news of the incident came out, Kuttan received a medal for his bravery. As a result, Subhash’s mother hugs Kuttan and thanks him for saving his son’s life.

Despite successfully saving Subhash, the movie has a bittersweet end. The Manjummel Boys’ friendship allegedly falls out. A picture of the real Manjummel Boys is also revealed at the end who faced the incident in 2006.
