Dry Day ending: Was Gannu able to secure the alcohol ban bill?

Toward the end of Dry Day, Satto pretends to have a change of heart and tells Gannu and his supporters that he has withdrawn from the elections. He states that he now believes Gannu should win as his reason for withdrawal. He then joins Gannu’s protest but continues to get Gannu’s friends drunk behind his back. This affects the protagonist as well, who struggles to overcome his dependence on alcohol.

Satto tells Gannu to march through the town as a suggestion, as this would get more people to join his protest. However, when Gannu passes by the wine shop with his supporters, Balwant tries to tempt him to drink and end the protest. However, the former refuses to take the bait and end the protest.

Hoping that Gannu’s resolution can be broken, Satto sneaks in alcohol at night. However, instead of drinking, Gannu exposes Satto’s wrongdoing to his supporters. To get rid of Satto, the protagonist and his best friend lay a trap and led him to believe that he had been craving alcohol. As expected, Satto brings him a bottle, making it easier for Gannu to expose him. Satto is then beaten up by Gannu’s supporters, who ruin Balwant’s wine shop as well. Satto’s actions affect his public image.

Apparently, Gannu already knew about Satto’s intentions. He was aware that Satto had been trying to get him to end his protest. On the other hand, Nirmala decides to keep the baby as she feels pride in her husband and his actions.

Does Dauji’s help or threaten Gannu?

Meanwhile, Gannu’s protest gain a lot of media attention. The number of his supporters increases, and even certain NGOs join his efforts. However, his rising popularity becomes a threat to Dauji’s party, and when Gannu files a petition in court to ban alcohol in their town, Dauji decides to take action.

Even before Gannu could file his nomination for the municipal elections, Dauji gets Gannu arrested on charges of provoking the public. This results in Janki setting herself on fire, a woman who had been Gannu’s supporter since the beginning. This also pushes Gannu to think about his protest and how he should end it. But Nirmala tells him that the hopes of several women like Janki were on him, so ending it wouldn’t be fair to them.

Later, Dauji offers to let Gannu represent his party in the elections. But Gannu refuses, to which Dauji responds with a threat. He tells Gannu that he will kill Janki and frame him for her death. Unfortunately, Gannu has no choice but to end his protest. However, he does end up winning the backing of Dauji’s party, but that turns Gannu’s supporters against him.

At the end of Dry Day, Dauji brings Gannu to his former supporters who were protesting with him. He asks them to forgive Gannu and support him in the upcoming elections. However, instead of apologizing, Gannu tells the crowd how Dauji had helped him realize the importance of buying and selling alcohol. He further announces that Dauji would protest by consuming alcohol until they make it compulsory for everyone in their town.

Later, Dauji, displeased by Gannu’s speech, threatens him again. But instead of bowing down to him, the protagonist makes the crowd listen to Dauji’s threats through the wire he was wearing. Finally, Gannu’s supporters learn the reason behind why he had to end the protest. He is able to regain his supporters, while Dauji loses his. The latter’s forced resignation from the legislative assembly puts an end to his political career.

The movie ends with the chief minister promising Gannu about introducing a bill to ban alcohol, which he ends up keeping. After people discover that Balwant had been producing and selling fake liquor, authorities shut down his liquor store. Finally, the small town of Jagodhar no longer sold alcohol. Gannu wins the elections and becomes a municipal corporator. Nirmala finally gives birth to their daughter.
