Netflix June 3rd #1
Asmodexia (2015, dir. Marc Carreté)
This is an atypical, fascinating take on the demonic possession/exorcism film. Recommended for its totally different vibes.
Netflix June 3rd #2
The Burbs (1989, dir. Joe Dante)
Before Joe Dante's latest, Burying the Ex , hits theaters and VOD this month, his masterpiece The Burbs hits Netflix Instant. A horror-comedy about the hypocrisy of suburban living, this quite simply one of the greats.
If you know someone who doesn't like The Burbs , get that lame-o out of your yard.
Netflix June 3rd #3
Dead Snow (2009, dir. Tommy Wirkola)
While Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead is the superior film, Tommy Wirkola's first Nazi zombie outing certainly has its fans. The gory, Evil Dead -influenced piece of work is now available to stream.
Netflix June 3rd #4
Island of Dr. Moreau (1977, dir. Don Taylor)
From the director of Escape from the Planet of the Apes , The Final Countdown and Damien: Omen II comes the 1977's adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic tale, starring Burt Lancaster and Michael York. Both chronologically and quality-wise, lands right in between Island of Lost Souls and the infamous 1996 take.
Netflix June 3rd #5
Kidnapped (aka Secuestrados ) (2010, dir. Miguel Angel Vivas)
One of the best, most visceral horror films of the 21st century thus far, Vivas' home invasion ordeal is also a technical marvel. Unfolding in urgent long takes and spectacular split screen, Kidnapped is claustrophobic, graphic and totally fucking grim.
Netflix June 3rd #6
The Lost Boys (1987, dir. Joel Schumacher)
What a treasure
Netflix June 3rd #7
The Others (2001, dir. Alejandro Amenábar)
Amenábar's modern ghost story favorite remains an elegant, eerie, melancholic scary story. A pleasure to revisit.
Netflix June 3rd #8
Out of the Dark (2015, dir. Lluís Quílez)
Starring Julia Stiles, Out of the Dark sees "a young family’s new life turn from promising to terrifying when they are forced to confront ancient legends, ghosts, and a haunting family secret."
Netflix June 3rd #9
Pet Sematary (1989, dir. Mary Lambert)
Mary Lambert's awesome Stephen King adaptation is still alternately frightening, grotesque and darkly comedic. A favorite of mine and likely the same for many Shock readers.
Netflix June 3rd #10
Pet Sematary 2 (1990, dir. Mary Lambert)
Less beloved, but Pet Sematary 2 has its ardent defenders, and I'm very tempted to rewatch.
Netflix June 3rd #11
Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008, dir. Darren Lynn Bousman)
The cult is ever growing for Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich's mad musical in which vital organs are on loan from a mega corporation. An add to Netflix is sure to help.
Netflix June 3rd #12
Troll (1986, dir. John Carl Buechler)
Michael Moriarty and a truly eccentric cast (Sonny Bono, Julia Louis-Dreyfus) star in FX artist John Carl Buechler's '86 tale of a troll king in San Francisco. Now best known as the precursor to its cult classic, psychotronic sequel.
Netflix June 3rd #13
Troll 2 (1990, dir. Claudio Fragasso)
There's no movie like it
Netflix June 3rd #14
Would You Rather (2013, dir. David Guy Levy)
Perhaps overshadowed by the tremendous Cheap Thrills , Would You Rather is nonetheless a grim, worthy watch with similar themes of class disparity and extreme measures.
