The upcoming F. Javier Gutierrez-directed new film in The Ring series, titled Rings, is expected to be a prequel about the origin of “Samara’s reign of terror.”
Bloody Disgusting reports the film takes place before the creation of the unmarked tape which terrorized the characters of The Ring and The Ring 2. The question then is this a pure retelling of Samara’s tragic childhood, as we experienced briefly via flashback in The Ring? Is this some of her early work as a vengeful VHS vision? It seems strange the filmmakers, including screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, would avoid exploring how Samara operates in a modern culture dominated by “sharing.”
We won’t have long to see how this shakes out. Rings is set for a release this November 13, 2015.
