Neill Blomkamp Wants a ‘Genetic Sibling of Aliens’

It was clear from the design work and character presence (Hicks, namely) that Neill Blomkamp’s hope and vision for an upcoming Alien film would look lovingly to James Cameron’s lauded action sequel. Now he’s said as much in a new interview with Sky News.

Speaking to the recently announced and currently developing fifth Alien, which seems ever so likely to have Sigourney Weaver return, Blomkamp says, “I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So, it’s Alien, Aliens, this movie.”

Of course the issue is that Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection exist, and aren’t exactly forgotten. Some are speculating this language means they could be retconned or disregarded, while I’m choosing to believe Blomkamp’s sequencing is a tonal reference. Even still, 3 and Resurrection are fascinating, weird, flawed films from directors like David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. They’re also different as hell from Aliens; as Aliens was to its predecessor— a good thing.

There’s been no shortage of filmmakers, especially ones making sequels to genre films, who use Aliens as a touchstone. The film is great stuff to be sure, but it’s not the only film, nor the only Alien (Ridley’s is the masterpiece). A specifically Aliens-esque Alien sequel feels limited in sight, especially when the designs we’ve already seen feel so intriguing.

Sky also spoke to Weaver, who says, “I would love to take Ripley out of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to such an excellent story. So when someone like Neill Blomkamp said, ‘I’m interested in finishing this story, my little ears perked up.’

Find the interview, below. Surely, much more to come.
