First Look at the New Titty Twister, Thoughts on From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series So Far

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series airs its fifth episode tonight on the El Rey Network; Joe Menendez directs. I have to ask: Who is tuning in? I seem to be seeing one of two things…a.) no one can find out what channel the El Rey Network is and b.) there’s apprehension about the series’ quality.

For those with Time Warner in Los Angeles – you have El Rey. The channel is in the high 300s. Everyone else: Call your cable provider. There’s a good chance you have it and don’t know it. As for the quality of the show… It has grown on me. As I said when I reviewed episode one a few weeks back, it’s hard for me to set aside the ’96 film. I’ve seen it more than a few times. I know it backward and forward. But as the series has gone on, both staying true to the film yet going off into new directions with new characters, I’m starting to appreciate it.

The production value is strong, the performances are fun, the pace is a bit uneven at times, but it makes up for it with a few good twists. They’re pushing the Fuller family into some interesting new territory (talk about drama surrounding preacher Jacob!) and the unhinged Richie Gecko continues to amuse me. The show still hasn’t landed at the Titty Twister, but at this point, I’ve accepted this as part of the fun and charm. “Which part of the film are they tackling next and how is it going to spin off from that?” Someone recently said to me, “If the film didn’t exist, we’d all be enjoying this show a heck of a lot more.” And I have to agree with him there. I’d dig the f**k out of this show. It’s a pretty darn good effort.

Still, there are some of you out there that have to be seeing this with fresh eyes, right? What do you think of the series?
