Comic-Con 2012: The Director, Cast Talk Resident Evil: Retribution

He tells us, “I’m excited about the franchise, and I think that translates into the movies that we make. That’s from an emotional perspective.  From a more intellectual approach, I’ve always felt that for a franchise to evolve and grow and not become stale, you have to change things.  A franchise has to evolve.  It can’t stay the same.  It can’t just do the same thing over again and expect the audience to come out in increasing numbers, or even stay the same. You’ll get a declining audience.  And I’ve always looked at the movies and tried to make a slightly different movie each time.”

He also talked about how this one is the biggest in scale. Milla Jovovich also let us in on a little secret, saying that Anderson told her the sixth one will bring everything back to the beginning in tone and story.

She explains where we are now in the sequel, saying, “We are in the belly of the beast, pretty much.  I don’t want to give too much away, but, this is where Alice’s world gets completely turned upside down and in so many crazy ways that even she doesn’t understand. Or, but the time she’s aware of it, it’s just overwhelming what the Umbrella Corporation can do, or what they have become.  And, of course, for the audience it’s awesome.”

Star Michelle Rodriguez joked about eating snacks while watching her stunt double, but seemed really excited to come back to a franchise she once asked to be in. More so because she somehow managed to survive a headshot! She says how that happened will be revealed in each city and that it’s a really cool explanation. She tells us we’re in for a treat.

“A lot of people getting thrown around. A lot of kickin’. A lot of zombies getting’ smacked around. A lot of zombies flyin’ atchya. A lot of guns goin’ off. Shit  loads of guns. A lot of bullets flyin’ atchya. A lot of explosion. A lot of shrapnel. A lot of zombies spitting blood. The only thing out of all of that that I would love to see more of is heads being chopped off and flying at you. Cuz I’ve always thought that image is so cool in 3D- of a head being chopped off and the blood coming out, in slow motion – woom! – in slow motion and people ‘ah!!’ You know what I mean? [laughs] You have to watch and find out…”

Oded Fehr is back as well, among a team of people who come to help Alice in her fight. He says, “We assemble a team of people and we help come get her out of trouble.  And it’s great because nothing is what it seems to be, so people we see and the places we go to, we don’t know if its real or not and it all culminates in the biggest car chase scene ever, and the most unlikely characters take part in it.  It’s scary. It’s fun.  It’s action-packed.  Compared to the last one, in terms of action, he really amped it up.”
