Fright Night: What Did You Think?

Ryan sounds off, now, tell us your opinion

Ah, Fright Night. You know, when I was in film school, I declared I’d quit the film industry if they ever remade one of my favorite horror films of all time. And here we are. A remake has happened and is opening this weekend. Needless to say, I didn’t stick to my word (that was 16 years ago).

I caught the Craig Gillespie re-imagining a few weeks back. Although our guest reviewer liked it, I didn’t care for it. I felt the new Fright Night lacked a first act, I couldn’t connect with Charley Brewster or his problems, Evil Ed wasn’t eccentric enough and there were some foolish added character twists that seemed to exist solely to depart from the source material. It is pretty much beat-for-beat the original film, however. I liked Gillespie’s vision, but he script didn’t hold up for me. On the positive side, I thought Colin Farrell did fine in the role. His performance is downright weird, but just wacky enough to like.

I’d give it a 4 out of 10.
