Moving the story to Italy
Gardern McKay’s novel “Toyer” may finally be reaching the big screen.
Vulture reports Brian De Palma is revisiting the chance to do an adaptation. He last considered directing the film six years ago.
A few changes are in store for this tale of a lunatic who psychologically toys with his victims and then puts them in a coma. Producer Scott Steindorff tells Vulture the film will relocate the story from Los Angeles to Italy and set it against the backdrop of the Carnevale di Venezia in Venice.
“It has all the elements of suspense that Brian does so well in films like Blow Out and Carrie,” Steindorff says, “and by that I mean, it’s really frickin’ scary: I read the script on a plane, and I was still terrified.”
“Toyer” was first published in 1998.
