August is Up for Preacher Adaptation

Also penning Frankenweenie!

The Preacher big screen adaptation is on the move yet again, and this time…it has a writer. According to Variety, John August will take a crack at it for Columbia.

August penned Charlie’s Angels, Big Fish and The Corpse Bride. He’s also at work on Dark Shadows for Johnny Depp and a feature-length version of Frankenweenie for Tim Burton. Based on the short film, that Frankenstein-inspired story tells of a young man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car.

Preacher, based on the Vertigo comic book of the same name, follows Jesse Custer, a Texas preacher out to find God after being possessed by Genesis – the offspring of an angel and a demon who got it on. Turns out, the big “G” high-tailed it out of heaven once Genesis was born. Custer’s blood-soaked journey unites him with his girlfriend and a vampire and, along the way, they meet a lot of bizarre characters. Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon created the series which ran from 1995 to 2000.

Sam Mendes is directing for Columbia Pictures. Neal Moritz will produce through his Original Film production outfit.
