Dark Sky, Anchor Bay DVD Announcements

Corman’s return and a She-Beast

On February 24th, famed producer Roger Corman and the director of the upcoming Wrong Turn 3 bring to life an ancient creature when Anchor Bay Entertainment unleashes Cyclops on DVD February 24, 2009.

Eric Roberts, Kevin Stapleton, Frida Farrell and Craig Archibald star and this release promises graphic scenes not seen during its original Sci-Fi Channel broadcast. Here’s a synopsis: The Roman Empire is at its zenith. A time of mighty gladiators, lusty women, abundant wealth – and a ferocious one-eyed monster that slaughters those foolish enough to enter his forest domain. The corrupt Emperor Tiberius has a plan to please the bloodlust of the people: capture the creature and unleash him in the arena against his condemned slaves, including wrongfully imprisoned General Marcus Romulus (Kevin Stapleton. Now, the ultimate battle between man and beast is about to commence…and Rome will taste the full fury of Hell unleashed!

Meanwhile, Dark Sky Films will release Michael Reeves’ The She-Beast on April 28th: A small town in 18th century Transylvania is being terrorized by an evil witch. When a child is brutally attacked, the villagers capture the fiend and sentence her to death by dunking chair, but not before she casts a curse on them and their descendants. Two hundred years later, young newlyweds Veronica (Barbara Steele, Black Sunday) and Philip (Ian Ogilvy, And Now the Screaming Starts) pass through the town on a tour of the Carpathians, only to have their car pulled into a lake by an unseen force . A passing truck driver quickly rescues two bodies from the wreck. One is Philip, battered but alive, and the other is… the witch, back from the dead to wreak havoc on the town once again! Can Philip and his newfound friend, the great grandson of Professor Van Helsing, capture the witch and bring back Veronica?

Reeves helmed the Vince Price classic Witchfinder General. Dark Sky’s presentation will come with new audio commentary, however, the company doesn’t reveal who is participating in the track.

Also on that same day, Dark Sky releases The Centerfold Girls uncut and sporting a new transfer: A reedy man wearing saddle shoes and an ill-fitting suit drags the nude body of a young woman- her throat slit– along an otherwise empty beach. Soon a number of other beautiful women turn up dead, their throats also cut open. Nurses, students, stewardesses… what’s the common thread? All were centerfold models for a popular men’s magazine, prey to a bloodthirsty psychotic with a straight razor!

Look for a retrospective featurette with producer Arthur Marks and actors Andrew Prine, Francine York and Jennifer Ashley.
