Gunn Dabbles in Ultra-Violence

Slither director wraps new script

Before hopping on stage and owning the audience at this year’s Saturn Awards ceremony with his acceptance speech for the Filmmakers Showcase Award, Slither director James Gunn dropped some knowledge on Shock concerning his next project.

Aside from deflecting “you look like Ryan Rotten” comments all night long (gosh, must be tough) and introducing this writer to a man who dropped $5 million on an 8-minute short film (!), Gunn says he just finished his latest script, a ” new film in the works with [Slither’s] Paul Brooks and Eric Newman producing at Universal. I’ll have the same freedom I had on ‘Slither’ but I can’t talk too much about the movie itself.”

He confirms it most definitely falls into the horror category, but fans of his can expect “an ultra-violent cool thing,” Gunn explains. “It’s much different than ‘Slither,’ it’s not humorous. I wanted to test myself and try to write something where I didn’t rely on humor all of the time. And it was actually a difficult exercise for me, very emotional but I’m happy with how it came out.”

In previous conversations with the writer-director we learned this next project is not the Rosemary’s Baby-esque story he had talked about shortly after Slither‘s release. When Gunn’s ready to look inside his heart, open up and tell us more about this mystery film, we’ll let you know!
