Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 has finally hit the streaming site, revealing whether Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers break up or ultimately die. As the show heads toward its series finale, fans are expecting major casualties in the final episodes. Since both characters are still in the Upside Down, their lives remain in danger.
Here’s a breakdown of what happens to the couple.
Do Nancy and Jonathan die in Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 2?
Since Season 4, Nancy and Jonathan have had a strained relationship. However, in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1, Jonathan was carrying a ring to propose to Nancy in hopes of fixing things. That plan takes a dramatic turn in Volume 2 Episode 5, “Shock Jock,” when the two come across the exotic matter that holds up the flesh wall.
Without considering the consequences, Nancy shoots the exotic matter, sending shockwaves across the Upside Down and knocking both of them unconscious. At the same time, everything around them begins to melt, including the floor beneath them. As a result, the two fall into a room that slowly fills with a thick, gooey substance. After waking up, they attempt to escape, but none of their efforts succeed.
In that moment, Nancy and Jonathan realize they are going to die. They accept the situation and take the opportunity to be honest with each other. After a series of confessions, they realize that although they love each other, they need time apart.
Jonathan then reveals the ring he has been carrying. He says, “I tried to convince myself that this would somehow fix everything. But it was just gonna make things worse. Which is why it has been sitting like a cannonball in my pocket for the last two days. So, what do you say? Do you accept my un-proposal?” Nancy replies, “I accept your un-proposal.”
Nancy then throws the ring away, where it lands on the sludge that has now solidified. Overcome with relief, the two embrace. While they attempt to break through the wall to escape, Steve and Dustin rescue them in the following episode.
Although Nancy and Jonathan survive and make it to the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, their relationship does not. The series finale will air on New Year’s Eve on Netflix.
