Grey’s Anatomy viewers are concerned about the future of James Pickens Jr.‘s character, Dr. Richard Webber, and are wondering whether he will be leaving the medical drama. This comes after the character received a shocking, life-altering diagnosis in the latest episode and fall finale, titled “When I Crash.” Webber has been a main character since the series’ inception in 2005, playing a major role in several storylines. Notably, he has garnered attention among viewers for his alcoholism and associated struggles.
So, is Richard dying? Here’s what we know.

Is James Pickens Jr.’s Richard Webber dying and leaving Grey’s Anatomy?
Currently, it’s unclear if James Pickens Jr.’s Richard Webber is dying and leaving Grey’s Anatomy. However, the character has been diagnosed with cancer, indicating that he will face difficult situations moving forward.
Having said that, Webber is featured on Grey’s Anatomy Season 22’s cover art alongside Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey and Chandra Wilson’s Miranda Bailey, suggesting he’s not likely to go anywhere in the near future.
In the latest episode, Webber and Bailey frequently clashed. The former canceled a seminar that the latter was going to lead, which frustrated Bailey as Webber had not consulted her beforehand. The lingering tension between the pair grew after they fought over a surgery resuscitating a bus accident victim. Bailey was ready to stop the surgery and call the time of death, while Richard defied her orders and told the team to keep pushing and save the victim. Fortunately, the victim was successfully saved, quelling Bailey’s frustrations.
Bailey later met with Webber to inform him of the surgery’s success. However, the latter told the former that he had been diagnosed with cancer. It’s revealed that Webber was distracted throughout the episode as he was waiting for the results.
Grey’s Anatomy will now return to ABC on January 8, 2026.
