The 1991 Austin yogurt shop killings remain one of the most harrowing unsolved cases in the history of Texas, and after numerous attempts at covering the case, HBO has now released The Yogurt Shop Murders, a new documentary with a great shift in perspective and some new commentary. But 34 years after the grizzly murders and assaults, many details are still shrouded in mystery.
While sharp criminals have gotten away with some of the most horrific crimes in history, there are numerous factors contributing to this one not being solved.
Have the cases shown in HBO’s The Yogurt Shop Murders been solved, and why?
On December 5, 1991, two 17-year-old girls, Jennifer Harbison and Eliza Thomas, were working in the I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt! shop in Austin, Texas. Jennifer’s 15-year-old sister, Sarah Harbison, and Sarah’s 14-year-old friend, Amy Ayers, joined them at the end of the shift to drive home with them. But the four young girls never made it back.
Instead, the four girls were assaulted, raped, and shot in the back of the head inside the shop. The attacker lit the shop on fire and left. The authorities have not identified any perpetrator(s) yet.
The major problem in solving this crime was the contamination of the crime scene. As the perpetrator(s) set the crime scene on fire, most of the evidence was already destroyed. The Fire Department also used force to put out the fire, unknowingly worsening the crime scene.
To add to this, DNA technology was very new, and there was not enough advancement to profile the killer(s) based solely on the DNA found in one of the girls’ bodies. Moreover, the police had over 1200 suspects in the case. This happened mainly due to a flood of tips following the announcement of a cash prize.
Over the years, there were also multiple false confessions and even several arrests. But it turned out that almost all of these confessions came from coercion. The new documentary also delves into some of these confessions. All the convictions based on these were overturned later.
As of now, the case remains open. But advancements in technology do hint that this case could be solved in the future.
The Yogurt Shop Murders is now streaming on HBO Max.
