Here’s what we know so far about Jill Sobule’s death.

Jill Sobule passes away at 66, claims report

Jill Sobule, the singer-songwriter best known for the 1990s hits “I Kissed a Girl” and “Supermodel,” died Thursday morning in a house fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, according to her publicist. She was 66.

The Woodbury Public Safety Department reported firefighters responded to a residential fire at 5:30 a.m. and found the home engulfed in flames. The homeowners said one person was possibly inside. Firefighters later recovered the body of a woman in her 60s from the scene. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed.

Sobule had been staying with friends in Minnesota while preparing to perform selections from her one-woman musical Fck7thGrade*. She was scheduled to appear Friday at Swallow Hill Music in Denver, her hometown, according to her publicist. The performance has been canceled, and a free informal gathering will be held in her memory.

Sobule’s 1995 self-titled album featured “I Kissed a Girl,” a song about a woman’s experience kissing a female friend. In a 2022 interview with The New York Times, Sobule said the song came out when it was “dicey” to be a queer musician, but still broke into the mainstream and reached the Billboard charts. She identified as bisexual.

“Supermodel,” another track from the same album, gained popularity after being featured on the soundtrack of the film Clueless. The rebellious anthem helped solidify her place in pop culture.

“People call me a one-hit wonder,” Sobule told The New York Times. “And I say, ‘Wait a second, I’m a two-hit wonder!’”
