Jay North’s character on General Hospital explored
Jay North played Al Barker, a minor character in General Hospital. His character appeared in April and June 1982. Barker served as the lab technician at the hospital and also worked as a part-time geologist. His time on the show was cut short by Basil Durban, who killed him.
North was born on August 3, 1951, and kick-started his acting career at an early age. He first forayed into minor roles, which included an appearance on the game show Queen for a Day and commercials, until he got his big acting break with Dennis the Menace, in which he played the titular role. The series, based on Hank Ketcham’s comic strip of the same name, ran on CBS between 1959 and 1963.
North reprised his role of Dennis in commercials for the sitcom’s sponsors. He appeared in ads for Kellogg’s cereals, Best Foods mayonnaise, Skippy peanut butter, and Bosco chocolate milk.
Outside of Dennis the Menace, North had roles in projects like Zebra in the Kitchen, Here Comes the Grump, and The Simpsons. Besides acting, North also worked as a correctional officer for the Florida Department of Corrections. He mentored young artists via the advocacy group A Minor Consideration.
However, despite his success in Hollywood, North had a troubled personal life, which bled into his professional career. He disclosed the truth of his troubles in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, wherein he mentioned that his aunt, who served as his guardian while his mother was busy with work, was physically and emotionally abusive toward him while they were on set.
