TikTok’s ‘Maps’ dance trend explained
In the TikTok “Maps” trend, users can be seen dancing to a fast-paced version of the song “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Users are catching on this trend, making videos, particularly on the line, “Wait, they don’t love you like I love you.”
The first known video to reportedly follow this trend, is from user @southernbellesuzie, who shared a clip on September 15, 2024. In this clip, she dances to the tune in the restroom, where she can be seen moving downward as the song progresses while pointing her fingers for a few seconds when “wait” is uttered, and then swiftly picking up the pace when “they don’t love you like I love you” is said. She also changes her facial expressions from surprised to goofy.

As of writing, this video has garnered 2.4 million likes, 274.3k shares, and 135.8k saves.
Other users on the video-sharing site followed suit not long after, performing similar moves but bringing their own flavor. One user @jack_vgh can be seen dancing and moving his hips to the rhythm of the song in the video, while “they don’t love you like I love you,” is playing, but stops and does a stop sign-like gesture when the word “wait” is uttered.
This move seems to have become more popular than the original one as many users have taken to the dance step jack_vgh does in the video, but have also made slight variations to their dance moves.
Other users such as @soup2gud have taken to incorporating animals in the trend, by making them perform the dance moves, instead of doing it themselves.
