X-Men ’97 Episode 9 Ending Explained & Recap: What Happened to Wolverine & Jean?

Here’s X-Men ’97 Episode 9’s ending explained with a recap featuring spoilers about what happened. Dive into our breakdown and learn about the fates of Wolverine, Jean Grey, and other mutants.

What happened at the end of X-Men ’97 Episode 9?

X-Men ’97 Episode 9 titled “Tolerance Is Extinction, Pt. 2” showcased the aftermath of Magneto’s attack on Earth in Part 1. He ruined Earth’s magnetic fields and began a countdown for human extinction to avenge the mutants that died on Genosha. Rogue and Sunspot joined him in his cause, while the X-Men launched a two-pronged assault to stop Magneto, Bastion, and Mr. Sinister.

Charles, Scott, Logan, Jubilee, and Kurt went after Magneto in hopes of reasoning with him to reverse the damage to Earth. Meanwhile, Beast, Jean, Storm, Forge, Morph, and Cable went after Bastion to sever his control over the Sentinels.

Morph turned into the Hulk to fight the robots on the ground alongside Beast, while Forge and Storm battled them mid-air. Mr. Sinister intervened and took on Jean. He also used his mind-control on Cable to make him attack her.

The X-Men fought well to begin with, but the villains eventually gained the upper hand. Morph and Beast failed to outsmart Bastion, who snatched the collar that was meant to stop him. Storm and Forge were shot down by the Sentinels and Cable attacked Jean with a massive blast.

Meanwhile, Wolverine managed to take Magneto’s helmet off to allow Charles to control him. But Scott intervened so Jean’s team could get more time to stop Bastion. As a result, Magneto recovered and went berserk, almost killing Charles in the process.

Fortunately for the professor, Wolverine stabbed Magneto, but he then pushed Wolverine back. Using his abilities, he began to extract the adamantium from Wolverine’s body right before the episode ended.

Now that the fates of Wolverine, Jean, Storm, Forge, and planet Earth hang in the balance, the upcoming finale will reveal who dies and who survives.

Did Magneto Kill Wolverine in X-Men ’97 Episode 9?

Things got intense between Wolverine and Magneto. Wolverine even brought back Magneto’s line “The brave are always the first to die” from X-Men Season 1 Episode 13, “The Final Decision”, which aired back in 1993.

As mentioned above, Magneto pushed Logan back and survived the stab wounds long enough to pull the Adamantium out of his body. It looked extremely painful and could be enough to kill him. But there’s a huge possibility for him to survive due to his regenerative abilities.

The series could easily continue with an adamantium-less Wolverine, but losing the fan-favorite character entirely could be too much for fans to handle, especially after losing Gambit earlier in the show.

Did Jean Grey Die in X-Men ’97 Episode 9?

Cable fired a heavy blast at Jean, which seemingly overpowered her defenses. But her telekinesis has saved her in the past by forming a protective shield around her. So similar to Wolverine, it’s likely that she will also survive and fight back in the season finale.
