Joker 2: Are Folie à Deux’s Events Real, Fake, a Dream, or Delusion?

With the Joker 2 trailer out, fans are wondering if Folie à Deux’s events take place for real. Are they fake and imaginary, similar to a dream or delusion? Is it all in Arthur and Harley’s heads? Here’s everything you need to know.

Are the events of Joker 2 Folie à Deux really happening?

While the events of Joker 2 are likely real, some of them could be a delusional dream shared by both Joker and Harley.

With the ending of the first Joker, director Todd Phillips kept the audience guessing. It all seemed real until Arthur Fleck was revealed to be an unreliable narrator. There were several events that he purely imagined in his mind, but weren’t happening for real.

For instance, his relationship with Zazie Beetz’s Sophie was not real, which threw viewers into a spiral by making them wonder whether everything in Joker was real or if was it all in his head. Was it all just a joke that he told his therapist? Ultimately, that was left to the interpretation of the viewers.

Todd Phillips and the team continue to instill the same confusion among the viewers with Joker 2’s events as well. While it seems most of it will be real, some instances could be in the heads of Arthur, and now even Lady Gaga’s character as the title of the film suggests.

Are the events of Joker: Folie à Deux imaginary and a dream?

All events of Joker: Folie à Deux will not be fake and imaginary. But both Joker and Harley could be sharing a delusion, such as their musical numbers.

‘Folie à Deux’ means a delusion shared between two people. So, with two psychologically challenged people, Joker and Harley, coming together, a few fake and imaginary sequences could be expected.

Joker 2 has already been confirmed to take on the musical genre. In the trailer, a cover of Jackie DeShannon’s “What the World Needs Now Is Love” plays in the background. The song implies that Joker and Harley’s love is needed to heal the world.

So, in the movie, as soon as they bond with each other, their romance could lead to a few musical numbers as shown in the trailer, which could all be a delusion shared by the two. But besides the musical numbers, what’s real and what isn’t remains to be seen.
