It has been over a year since Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume was released to the public. Because of this, fans have been wondering if there will be a sequel to the fantasy adventure anime film. The story follows the titular character, a 17-year-old high-schooler, and Souta, who join forces to prevent a series of disasters in Japan by sealing doors from a colossal and supernatural worm that causes earthquakes upon release.
Here’s all we know about Suzume 2 and whether or not it’s coming out.
Is there a Suzume 2 release date?
There is no Suzume 2 release date as it is unlikely to happen.
Makoto Shinkai has typically not made any direct sequels to any of his films. As such a Suzume 2 is very unlikely. Moreover, Shinkai himself has not offered any updates or information on whether Suzume would get a sequel.
Furthermore, Shinkai also tends to wrap up the storylines in each film he makes and provide definite conclusions to them. As such, he eliminates the need for sequels.
However, there is a chance that a spiritual successor or a spin-off to Suzume could be made in the future. This is because it has happened before when Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You, which was released in 2019, served as a spiritual successor to his 2016 film Your Name and featured the main protagonists from that film, Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu.

Why Suzume 2 might not be happening anytime soon
Suzume 2 probably isn’t coming out, because as mentioned above, the need for a sequel has been eliminated since director Makoto Shinkai wrapped up the storyline in the film itself.
The official synopsis for Suzume reads:
“Suzume, 17, lost her mother as a little girl. On her way to school, she meets a mysterious young man. But her curiosity unleashes a calamity that endangers the entire population of Japan, and so Suzume embarks on a journey to set things right.”
