Shogun Episode 3 Ending Explained, Spoilers & Recap: What Happened?

Here’s the Shogun episode 3 ending explained, featuring spoilers, and a recap of what happened. Dive into our breakdown and learn what could be next for Toranaga and Blackthorne.

What happened at the end of Shogun Episode 3?

After escaping Osaka, Lord Toranaga adds Blackthorne to his vassal, gives him the title of Hatamoto, and asks him to train a regiment in the foreign tactics of war.

The episode saw Lord Toranaga using his cunningness to escape Osaka, where his death was imminent at the hands of the other regents in the council. Making their way to their ship, they made a trade with the Black Ship traders and ambushed the pirates who were blocking their exit.

Blackthorne, who was asked to stay back on Toranaga’s smaller ship, bravely followed the Black Ship, used its cover, and also managed to escape Osaka. Meanwhile, Toranaga resigned from the Council of Regents, which prevented his impeachment as there are 5 regents needed to vote for that.

On the small ship, Toranaga rejoined Blackthorne and thanked him for his help and bravery during their escape. In return, he gave Blackthorne the honorable title of Hatamoto and asked him to train a regiment while ignoring his past crimes for the foreseeable future.

He also asked Blackthorne to train him in swimming. Moving forward, John Blackthorne aka Hatamoto will likely become an important member of Toranaga’s vassal. His foreign tactics will give them the edge to fight in the upcoming war against Lord Ishido and other regents.

Who dies in Shogun Episode 3?

Toda Hirokatsu aka Buntaro died in Shogun episode 3 while helping Lord Toranaga and the others to escape Osaka.

Kashigi Yabushige and other soldiers of Lord Toranaga were attacked by Lord Kimaya’s assassins. To help them escape, Buntaro bravely held those soldiers back. He took on an entire battalion on his own and sacrificed his life for his Lord.
