According to various sources such as Variety and Deadline, a Baywatch reboot is in the works at Fox. Fox has closed a script and penalty deal for a new version of the iconic action drama series under the purview of Fremantle.
Reportedly, Lara Olsen (best known for her work on the 2020 series Spinning Out) has been hired as the showrunner for the reboot. Olsen will also serve as an executive producer alongside the original Baywatch series creators Michael Berk, Gregory J. Bonann, and Douglas Schwartz.
The reported logline for the Baywatch reboot reads (via Variety):
“Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”
Talks of a Baywatch reboot had been happening for a while. In 2023, Deadline exclusively reported about it.
Before that, back in 2018, Fremantle’s International COO Bob McCourt told Deadline that a remake of the original series was “discussed” after they remastered the old episodes into high definition. “I think if this remastered version is sold extensively and a new audience comes to Baywatch, then it will give us a real indication as to whether a new series could be successful,” he had said at the time.
It appears that the idea stuck with Freemantle and they are going ahead with the reboot.
