Funimation and Crunchyroll Merge: What is Shutting Down & What Stays

Subscribers wish to know the status of the Funimation and Crunchyroll merger. Who acquired who and which of the two is shutting down? Here’s all you need to know.

Is Funimation shutting down after the Crunchyroll merger?

Yes, Funimation is set to shut down on April 2, 2024, and its entire catalog will fold into Crunchyroll due to the merger.

2022 brought the official announcement that anime streaming platform Funimation would add its hundreds of hours worth of streaming content into Crunchyroll, after being acquired by the latter. Now the date of Funimation’s shutdown is nearing and subscribers have been informed that the old streaming platform will cease to exist from April 2, 2024 onwards.

Is Crunchyroll shutting down?

No, Crunchyroll is not shutting down. Having acquired Funimation, all its data and content will move to Crunchyroll while the old Funimation platform will end its services.

In late 2023, Crunchyroll shut down its digital Manga app on both mobile and web. But its anime streaming will be available with a much bigger catalog as all of Funimation’s data will be transferred to it.

The updated blog post of Funimation suggests that users holding their old accounts with Funimation must combine data with their account on Crunchyroll or leave it behind. Furthermore, future subscriptions will also be charged by Crunchyroll as Funimation wrote:

“Going forward, the subscription fees will be reflected in the next billing cycle through Crunchyroll or the third-party access platform, following Crunchyroll’s pricing.”

Funimation also revealed what happens to the users with purchased digital copies. The platform’s post added:

“We understand that you may have concerns about your digital copies from Funimation. Please note that Crunchyroll does not currently support Funimation Digital copies, which means that access to previously available digital copies will not be supported. However, we are continuously working to enhance our content offerings and provide you with an exceptional anime streaming experience. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to explore the extensive anime library available on Crunchyroll.”

It will be interesting to see if Crunchyroll will add this service in the future.
