A Prayer for the Dying: Callum Turner to Lead Period Drama Movie

According to Deadline, Masters of the Air star Callum Turner has been tapped for the leading role in the upcoming film adaptation of A Prayer For The Dying, based on Stewart O’Nan’s post-Civil War novel of the same name. Turner will also be joined by European stars Kujath Thorp (Sick of Myself) and Gustav Lindh (The Northman). Production is expected to begin this summer.

“Since I first read the script, I was pulled in by this riveting and thought-provoking story, and Dara’s ambitious director’s vision makes it all the more powerful,” producer Dyveke Bjørkly Graver said in a statement. “Having Callum Turner on board, as our main character Jacob, is all we could have hoped for and I can’t wait to bring this film out to audiences.

Who’s involved in A Prayer For the Dying?

A Prayer for the Dying will be directed and written by Dara Van Dusen in her feature-length directorial debut. It will be produced by Andrea Berentsen, Mimmi Spång, Tristan Goligher and John Baker. The project will be financed by Creative Europe, Norwegian Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute and UK Global Screen Fund. It hails from Anton and New Europe Films.

The film takes place in 1870 in Friendship, Wisconsin, a small town of Scandinavian settlers still suffering the repercussions of the recent Civil War,” reads the synopsis. “When faced with a new and even deadlier threat, one man is forced to make a harrowing choice: save his young family or defend the community that gave him a second chance at life and meaning.”

This marks Turner’s latest major film project as the lead, after previously appearing in the Fantastic Beasts movies and in George Clooney‘s The Boys in the Boat movie. He is currently starring alongside Austin Butler in Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air series.
