Murder in Boston: Who is Charles Stuart & Why Did He Kill His Wife?

Viewers of the Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage, and Reckoning documentary were shown the real-life story of Carol Stuart’s infamous murder and want to know who her murderer and husband Charles Stuart is and why he killed Carol. Here are both your questions answered.

Who is Charles Stuart?

Charles Stuart was a fur store manager based in Boston and the husband of Carol Stuart, a tax attorney who was pregnant with his child before her murder.

In 1989, Charles Stuart worked as the general manager for a garment and fur store in Boston, Edward F. Kakas & Sons. Nine years prior, he met Carol while they both worked at the same restaurant, where Charles worked as a chef and Carol worked as a waitress. Then five years later, in 1985, Charles and Carol married and moved to an upscale neighborhood named Reading.

Then on October 23, 1989, Charles reported that he and Carol were stopped by a Black man on the road who ran up to them with a revolver and shot Carol in the head and Charles in the stomach. Charles was taken to the hospital along with Carol who died after delivering her child, Christian. Christian then died 17 days later. Both of these murders ultimately made the case a double homicide.

Charles Stuart was initially not a prime suspect in the murder as the law enforcement officials believed his story of a Black man shooting both him and his wife after they drove him to Mission Hill, a predominantly Black and Latino area. However, the authorities eventually found out that Stuart was the one behind the murder, with the help of his brother Matthew, who confessed the truth.

Why did Charles Stuart kill his wife Carol?

Charles Stuart killed his wife Carol to collect her life insurance payout, according to Charles’ brother Matthew, whom Charles roped in for his insurance fraud scam which involved Matthew pretending to rob the couple of Carol’s jewelry.

Unfortunately, the authorities could not arrest or imprison Charles as he committed suicide shortly after the truth was revealed.
