Napoleon Age Rating Explained: Why Is It Rated ‘R’?

Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix’s Napoleon received an R-rating and fans excited for the film want to know why. Is it safe for kids or teenagers? Here’s the justification behind Napolean’s adult-oriented rating and the answer to whether it is safe for children to watch.

Why is the Napoleon movie rated “R”?

As per the MPAA, Napoleon is “Rated R for strong violence, some grisly images, sexual content, and brief language.”

Ridley Scott’s latest outing brings the story of Napoleon Bonaparte to life. The French military commander rose to prominence on the back of his efforts and the impact he had while leading armies during the Revolutionary Wars. So naturally, his biopic would include strong violence and a few disturbing images.

Furthermore, most of Ridley Scott’s recent films including Alien: Covenant, All the Money in the World, The Last Duel, and House of Gucci were rated “R.” The director is known for his R-rated filmography and arguably delivers his best work in movies that are suited for mature audiences.

So, nothing different was expected out of Napoleon, which includes sexual content featuring the French Emperor and his wife, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby. Their tempestuous relationship, along with the film’s extremely violent war sequences, makes it highly adult-oriented.

Is the Napoleon movie safe for kids?

No, Napoleon is not safe for kids as it features extreme and bloody violence throughout, with a bit of sexual content sprinkled across the film.

Parents are advised not to take their kids along while attending a screening of Napoleon as it could have a negative impact on them. What’s more, those who can’t bear bloody violence in a film should certainly avoid Napoleon.

The official synopsis of Napoleon reads:

“A personal look at the French military leader’s origins and swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of Napoleon’s addictive, volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.”
