Although Richard Madden’s Ikaris seemingly met his demise at the end of 2021’s Eternals, fans are curious about whether or not the character will return to the MCU. Here is all you need to know.
Will Ikaris return to the MCU?
Ikaris has not been confirmed to return to the MCU, as of this writing.
Reliable scooper and industry insider DanielRPK has reported that Richard Madden’s Ikaris would return to the MCU, particularly in Eternals 2, which is reportedly in early development, despite his supposed demise at the end of Eternals. However, neither Marvel Studios nor Kevin Feige have officially confirmed the character’s return.
However, in an April 2023 interview with Comicbook.com while promoting his new Amazon Prime Video series Citadel, Madden seemingly shot down hopes of Ikaris’ return when he said the following statement:
“Well, he flew into the sun. That’s kind of hard to come back from, Isn’t it?”
Despite this statement from Madden, it is possible that Ikaris could return to the MCU, especially in an Eternals sequel. This is because the first film revealed that the Eternals were synthetic clones created by Celestials and that there were numerous clones of all of them that were created at the same time.
Thus, despite his apparent death at the end of Eternals, it is entirely possible that Arishem could create a new clone of Ikaris to presumably fight the remaining Eternals consisting of Kingo, Druig, Thena, Sersi, Phastos, and Makkari, as well as Starfox and Pip the Troll. This could spell the start of a new Emergence after the previous one was foiled by the Eternals, who also convinced the old Ikaris to redeem himself and join them to stop the Emergence.
Ultimately, nothing is official about Richard Madden’s Ikaris’ return. Thus, fans will have to wait for official confirmation from Marvel Studios about their plans for the character, moving forward.
