One Piece Sapphire Scale

One Piece: What is the Sapphire Scale Disease?

What is the Sapphire Scale disease in One Piece? Manga readers who are up to date with the latest chapters might be curious about this new mysterious disease. Here is a guide on everything we know so far about the Sapphire Scale disease.

One Piece: What is the Sapphire Scale disease?

The Sapphire Scale disease is an extremely rare, incurable, and terminal disease.

What happens is it covers someone’s skin with blue stones once they are exposed to natural light. This is whether it’s the sun or the moon. As a result, their skin also hardens like stone. This affects every inch of their body, as mentioned in chapter 1098 of the manga with Ginny. This is the first time we have heard of this disease in the One Piece universe.

Eventually, Bonney also contracted the disease, just like her mother. The Sapphire Scale disease also seems generally unheard of among doctors, since some doctors who checked up on Bonney were unfamiliar with it.

While it is only one of the fan theories at the moment, the disease may be related to the Amber Lead/White Lead syndrome. They share similar qualities, especially in how the illness is related to ores or stones. Amber Lead syndrome is hereditary and non-contagious. Based on what happened with Ginny and Bonney, it is possible that the Sapphire Scale disease would be the same or at least have some similarities.

However, we also don’t know yet how Ginny contracted the disease. It looked like she didn’t have the Sapphire Scale disease when she was growing up. This means she must have gotten it somewhere during her time with the Revolutionary Army or when she was with the Celestial Dragon.
