After the success of Part 1 in 2021, the Mortal Kombat 2 release date has been highly anticipated by many viewers. It is a martial arts fantasy franchise that gives us its own spin on the video game series of the same name. The first film only teased the upcoming tournament to save the Earthrealm. Now, the second movie is expected to bring it to life. But when is it coming out?

Is there a Mortal Kombat 2 release date?

Mortal Kombat 2’s release date could arrive by late 2024 or 2025.

The movie began production in late June 2023, per producer Todd Garner. But the SAG-AFTRA strike halted its filming. The first movie took 17 months to finish its production and post-production stages. So, depending on when the sequel restarts its production post-strike, it could be released in late 2024 or sometime in 2025.

These dates are an estimation based on the information we have so far. ComingSoon will provide an update to this story once we receive official details.

The plot details of Mortal Kombat 2 haven’t been revealed yet, but we can be sure that Johnny Cage will be in it. After all, he was teased towards the end of the original. So, he could join the likes of Cole Young, Sonya Blade, and Jax in the tournament to save Earthrealm.

Karl Urban joins the R-rated sequel as Johnny Cage, while others in the cast include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn.

Where is Mortal Kombat 2 coming out?

Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to come out in theaters, most likely in 2025.

The official synopsis of Mortal Kombat reads:

“In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.

Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family but to stop Outworld once and for all?”
