James Gunn’s Favorite Superman Character Returning in the DCU Shows His Biggest Strength

James Gunn’s DC Universe is still in its early stages, but the Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO recently teased the possible addition of a character that should excite fans, especially due to the strengths Gunn has displayed in covering past heroes in other films.

James Gunn’s expertise in the world of superheroes will shine with Mr. Handsome

Recently, Gunn took to the social media platform Threads to tease his upcoming follow-up to Superman, Man of Tomorrow. The movie, which is scheduled to be released in United States theaters and IMAX next year, is written and directed by Gunn, and serves as a follow-up to Superman. It will see David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprise their respective roles as Superman/Clark Kent and Lex Luthor.

While most of the rest of the movie remains shrouded in mystery, Gunn took to social media to share a plaque that read “Mr. Handsome Fan Club,” alongside a cryptic caption of “we’re live.” While not exactly confirmation, this seemed to hint that the character that first appeared in Superman would be making a return for the upcoming sequel. In the first film, the character briefly appears as a chauffeur of sorts to guide Lex Luthor around his pocket dimension.

As we learned from Gunn last year on Threads, the character was created by Lex in a petri dish when he was just 12 years old and trying to “make a human.” It didn’t turn out well, but Gunn notes that the creature “might be the only one in the world Lex has any true sentiment for,” as noted by the fact that, in Superman, Lex keeps a photo of Mr. Handsome on his desk.

With Gunn teasing the fact that Mr. Handsome will be returning for Man of Tomorrow, it’ll no doubt be in a larger role. While some fans might be worried about this inclusion, Gunn’s history with superheroes should calm any issues.

The director is known for not only creating some wonderfully unique characters, but also displaying some of the more “odd” characters in endearing ways. People need only look to characters like Groot and Rocket Raccoon as proof of this, and while Mr. Handsome isn’t as cute as either of those, it’s not at all hard to see Gunn being able to come up with some fun side adventure or moment including Luthor’s favorite experiment.
