What are the best Amazon Prime Video sci-fi movies and TV shows to watch in April 2024?

April 2024 is a great time to dive into Prime Video’s lineup of sci-fi content. Any longtime sci-fi fan can find something to watch, and there’s a lot of great content for newcomers as well. Here are our picks for some of the best Prime Video sci-fi titles to available right now.

The Boys

Set in a world where superheroes are corporate-paid celebrities, The Boys is about a group of vigilantes who want to show how the industry is dishonest and abusive (while also getting revenge). This atypical superhero story puts real-world corporate and political practices under the magnifying glass and lampoons them with a dark and irreverent tone. It looks at what happens when power is unchecked and how the lines between good and evil aren’t always clear. As the show continues, we’re left wondering how far The Boys will go as they cross line after line in their quest to bring down the entire superhero trade. One thing to note, however, is that this is one of the more graphic shows on the list, so we recommend it for adult audiences only.

The Expanse

The Expanse is set in a near future where mankind has spread throughout the solar system. In the first episode, we meet a crew of ice haulers who discover a ship emitting a distress call. When they reluctantly attempt a rescue, they stumble onto evidence of a conspiracy that could upset the balance of power between the three major political powers: Earth, Mars, and the Belt. The Expanse is an excellent example of a hard science-fiction story told well. Disaster is just a pinhole puncture in the hull away, and there are no shields, lasers, or faster-than-light travel available here. The show addresses quite a few social issues along the way (without being too heavy-handed) and presents a plausible picture of our future.

Fallout

Based on the beloved video game series, Fallout takes place in a post-apocalyptic alternate universe where humanity nearly annihilated itself in a hail of nuclear fire. Most of those who survived had to brave the irradiated and inhospitable surface. Some became raiders, slaughtering their fellow man to survive, while others, like the Brotherhood of Steel, tried to restore some form of order. However, a select few made it into the vaults, where they lived in relative comfort. We get to see characters from all these avenues butt heads as the series unravels. We anticipate that fans of the franchise and newcomers alike will be drawn into this take on Fallout’s gritty and hostile world.

Heroes

In Heroes, ordinary people wake up to find they have superpowers like teleportation, time travel, and superhuman strength. As they learn to deal with their newfound abilities, they also have to deal with those who would use their power for evil and a mystery group that wants to control them. Heroes is an exciting and moving show that looks at what it means to be human through the lens of superpowers. It asks deep questions about fate, identity, and what it means to be a hero. Unfortunately, it falls off a bit after the first season, but many agree that the first 23 episodes are some of the best TV ever made.

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams

Philip K. Dick’s stories come to life in the anthology series Electric Dreams. With themes like alternate realities, AI, and the nature of human existence, each episode is a standalone tale, and you can watch the series in any order. It gives a fascinating look into Dick’s imaginative worlds, which range from dystopian futures to philosophical quandaries that ask what it means to be human. Along with exploring the effects of technology on the human state in a world that is becoming more complicated, Electric Dreams shows how Dick’s work is still relevant today.

Stargate

Stargate has been a popular sci-fi TV series for many years, and Prime Video has most of the franchise available for viewing. Enjoy watching Stargate Command’s adventures as they travel the galaxy, form alliances with alien races, and protect Earth from threats beyond imagining. From the original Stargate SG-1 series to the spin-offs Atlantis and Universe, the franchise contains a complex mythology combining ancient cultures, cutting-edge technology, and cosmic wonders.

The Tomorrow War

In this original Prime Video movie, time travelers from the year 2051 come to the present day to find soldiers to fight an impossible battle against an alien attack. Chris Pratt plays a high school teacher who joins the war to save the world while dealing with his own past and future. In The Tomorrow War, you’ll find heartfelt storytelling about sacrifice, fate, and the unbreakable bonds of love and family, along with exciting action to keep your heart racing.

Waterworld

In Waterworld, the polar ice caps have melted, submerging most of Earth’s landmass. The movie is about a drifter, the Mariner, who reluctantly saves a woman and a little girl from an attack by a gang of raiders called the Smokers. They convince him that the way to dry land, which has become a myth, is hidden in a tattoo on the little girl’s back. The Mariner has to defy his loner nature and fight both the dangerous open ocean and the cruel Smokers while keeping the young girl who holds the key to the future of humanity safe.
