Ghostbusters VR Game Gets Official Title & Release Window

A Ghostbusters VR game was announced in April, but little else was revealed about it. Developer nDreams has now released more information about the game, which is now called Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord. It is slated to come out on Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro, and PlayStation VR2 sometime in 2023.

nDreams didn’t elaborate more in its official avenues, but did speak more about it with Kinda Funny. Game Director Nathan Baseley talked about the need for authenticity, what pillars can’t be changed, how important multiplayer is for Ghostbusters, and emphasizing the qualities of VR. Host Greg Miller noted of its small changes like turning a cable car into a containment unit and how the Ghostbusters headquarters is a cable car station, both of which are fitting for its San Francisco setting. Some traditional tools have also been slightly tweaked to feel more natural for VR controllers like the Neutrona Wand which is akin to a Gatling gun with a handle on the side and top so the hand placement is more organic.

Missions will either focus on combat, investigation, or a combination of both. However, the studio didn’t release a trailer to show the mechanics in action. And despite the lack of video footage, Baseley talked about the new characters in the key art and even though players can’t create them from scratch or fully customize them, they can be dressed up with new costumes. There’s also a new villain called the Ghost Lord, who is an ever-present threat that is “attached to the city.” After giving a handful of these small details, Baseley ended the interview saying that this was “the closest experience of being a Ghostbuster” that players will see, given the immersive qualities of VR and its multiplayer modes.
