PlayStation State of Play Announced, Will Highlight Japanese Games

It’s been a few months since the last PlayStation State of Play. Rumblings were pointing to another one happening in March and now Sony has confirmed those rumors. The company announced that a State of Play will air on March 9 at 2 p.m. PT on its Twitch and YouTube channels.

As said on the PlayStation Blog, this update will include “new reveals and eye-catching updates” for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles, but nothing surrounding PlayStation VR2. It will also be a 20-minute show that will mainly focus on games from Japanese publishers. However, there will still be updates from games from around the world.

Sony obviously did not explicitly state what would be there, but the focus on Japanese titles does point to at least two big suspects: Final Fantasy XVI and the rumored Resident Evil 4 remake. Square Enix said that it would show more of the PS5-exclusive RPG in spring 2022. A recent report also pointed to the Resident Evil 4 remake being revealed in early 2022. And given Capcom and Sony’s relationship for revealing Resident Evil information, there’s also the possibility of Resident Evil Village‘s DLC being shown, which Capcom said it was working on in June 2021. Although not from a Japanese publisher, it’s also possible that Hogwarts Legacy will show up, given some comments by insiders.

However, it’s not clear if Spartacus, Sony’s answer to Game Pass, will be there. Games Beat’s Jeff Grubb reported on its pricing structure in February and said Sony was gearing up to announce it soon. After this State of Play’s announcement, he tweeted that he wasn’t sure that the service would be officially unveiled here, but that testing will be going public “very soon.”
