Report: Resident Evil 4 Remake Will Be Scarier & Have a Bigger Ada Campaign

As likely as it is, the Resident Evil 4 remake hasn’t even been officially announced. However, that hasn’t stopped reports contained alleged details about the rumored title. The newest report about the remake reveals some key information about it like its spookier tone, Ada’s campaign, and more.

Fanbyte‘s report from multiple sources states that Capcom is trying to make the remake scarier than the original. While that original has adrenaline-focused terror, it doesn’t utilize darkness and creeping horror nearly as much as its predecessors. Capcom is trying to change that by setting most of the game at night, shrouding once-visible levels in darkness. The report uses the iconic village scene as an example as that is one of the many sections that takes place well after the sun goes down in the remake. This direction is said to have come from early builds of the game, footage of which can be found on YouTube.

Ada’s sections are also being reworked. She previously had two of her own portions: Assignment: Ada and Separate Ways, which was only in ports after the GameCube release (but also wasn’t in the VR version). The former was a non-canon way to play as Ada in certain Resident Evil 4 levels, while the latter had more story, even if fans don’t hold this bonus in the same regard as Leon’s campaign. The remake is reportedly going to address that by combining the two to make a “more fluid and polished companion piece.” However, it’s not clear how or if this will be DLC or not. Regardless, the sources said it will be a “meaty” expansion.

The report also contains some tidbits about the leaked Wesker design, which was not intended for this remake and was instead for a canceled title. The game’s original director, Shinji Mikami, was also said to be interested in helping, but declined in order to help out with Tango Gameworks and its current project, Ghostwire: Tokyo. Video Games Chronicle also reported in May 2020 that Mikami had given the game his blessing when it first leaked the existence of the game.

The game’s release window or reveal still hasn’t been nailed down, but the report states that Capcom wants to announce it sometime in early 2022. Capcom isn’t always consistent with its Resident Evil announcements, but has had shorter announcement-to-release windows for its remakes. The Resident Evil 2 remake was announced in June 2018 and came out in January 2019. The Resident Evil 3 remake was revealed in December 2019 only to release four months later. For comparison, Resident Evil Village, an original game that wasn’t a remake, was announced in June 2020 and came out in May 2021. But given all of the rampant delays around the industry and inside Capcom, it’s also possible that the Resident Evil 4 remake isn’t announced in the early parts of 2022.

While Capcom has yet to confirm any of this, it does line up with a leak from November 2020. The leak held several unannounced Capcom games, some of which have been confirmed as the months have gone on. Said leak listed a Resident Evil 4 remake.
