Marvel’s Avengers Removes Paid XP Microtransactions From Game

Marvel’s Avengers recently came under fire for implementing microtransactions centered around in-game items that would give boosts to XP. Now, the team behind the game is removing the feature.

In a recent announcement made on the official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account, the developer said that they have decided to remove the ability to buy both Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase. The move comes following a few weeks of heavy backlash from the community after the move was introduced.

The full statement from the developer can be seen below:

“We apologize for not responding sooner to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables in the Marketplace. We introduced them as an option for an evolving player base, and did not see them as pay-to-win since they don’t offer power directly. After considering your feedback, we have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase. They will continue to be earnable rewards and those already owned are still usable. We hope that this can be the first step in rebuilding your confidence in us as a team. It continues to be our goal to make the very best game possible. Thank you for being a part of the Marvel’s Avengers community.”

Square Enix initially came under fire at the beginning of October when it introduced the ability to buy these two consumables via real-life money. The two items provided an XP boost and an increase in the amount of Fragments that a player can earn, respectively, and was seen as a way to introduce pay-to-win features into the game.

The move also came under backlash due to Square Enix’s decision to make leveling up a bit harder earlier in the year, with the fanbase seeing both moves as being anti-player. It’s unclear if the sentiment around the game will change after the move, although it is a good step forward for the company to remove the purchasable items and attempt to restore player confidence going forward.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
