Report: Dragon Age 4 Only Planned for Current-Gen Consoles & PC

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are quickly approaching their first year on the market, but the pair don’t have many true current-gen exclusives as most titles also come to the PS4 and Xbox One as well. However, future games are starting to change that and it looks like Dragon Age 4 is going to be one of those experiences that will only be on current-gen hardware.

This report comes from GamesBeat and simply claims that Dragon Age 4 will only be releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The story originally came from Twitter user FaizShaikh7681 as they found a job posting showing the versions of the game. GamesBeat, known for its mostly accurate insider information (especially with Electronic Arts games), independently corroborated the claim with its own sources. Neither Electronic Arts nor BioWare has commented either way.

And while it lacks an official statement, this move does make sense. EA, like many other publishers, has cross-generation releases in the beginning of a generation before it starts to focus only on new hardware as the years go by. Dragon Age: Inquisition it released just one year after the PS4 and Xbox One launched and also came out on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare’s next game that came out in 2017, was then only on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

EA has also already confirmed that one of its future games will only be on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC: the Dead Space remake. That game, which doesn’t currently have a release window, is only going to release on those newer platforms. However, Grid Legends, a game slated for 2022, is coming to both generations. Given how sports games are also unlikely to ditch the PS4 and Xbox One anytime soon, it seems as though this will be a case-by-case decision.

Dragon Age 4 is widely seen as a big project for BioWare as the studio has had a tumultuous handful of years following two panned titles and a bunch of studio departures. Dragon Age 4 has had to withstand this weight, too, as it was internally canceled since it lacked a live service component, but then was revived and announced twice at The Game Awards: once in 2018 and then again in 2020. BioWare has still yet to show much of the actual game itself, but some have been more optimistic, given the positive reception to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and the Bloomberg report that stated the game no longer had multiplayer components.
