The Force is with the Star Wars Trilogy

Lucasfilm’s and Fox Home Entertainment’s Star Wars Trilogy DVD was the top-selling title for the week ending September 26. It is estimated that the box set’s sales topped 3 million units during its first five days on store shelves.

Paramount Home Entertainment’s Mean Girls was the second-best-selling home video last week, and was the second-best-renting video during the same frame, generating about $6.63 million in gross rental spending, or 7.7% of its domestic boxoffice take.

Fox’s Man on Fire was the nation’s top rental title last week, earning about $7.83 million in gross rental spending for a 12-day cume of $19.4 million, or 24.9% of its domestic boxoffice gross. The film ranked No. 3 on VideoScan’s First Alert DVD sales chart during the same frame, down from its No. 1 ranking during its debut week.

Meanwhile, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind sold more than 600,000 combined DVD and VHS units its first day in release Tuesday (Sept. 28). It’s an impressive showing for a film that took in less than $40 million at the domestic boxoffice. The film is on track to sell 1 million combined DVD and VHS units during it first week in release, surpassing all expectations.
