Seabiscuit is Biggest Drama on DVD for 2003

Riding the crest of the holiday shopping season to a thundering first week finish, Seabiscuit burst out of the gate with over $80 million in consumer spending to become the year’s best-selling drama released on DVD and VHS. Released on December 16, the title sold 5 million units in its first six days of release.

“This is certainly a film that audiences loved and we were confident it would be just as enthusiastically embraced on DVD,” stated Craig Kornblau, president, Universal Studios Home Video.

The critically-acclaimed release, which recently received two Golden Globe nominations including “Best Picture” and “Best Supporting Actor — Drama” for William H. Macy, has earned over $120 million at the boxoffice. Named one of the year’s best films by the National Board of Review, the film stars Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Macy, and Hall of Fame jockey/actor Gary Stevens. Seabiscuit was written and directed by Gary Ross from the best selling novel of the same name.

The Seabiscuit DVD contains extensive bonus features including feature commentary with the film’s writer/director Gary Ross and filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, a racing history of the legendary horse, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, a photo section featuring cast photos taken by actor Jeff Bridges, and a making-of feature, among several others.

The 2-Disc Seabiscuit gift set includes the above bonus features as well as extensive interviews with the cast, rare archival material, and more behind-the-scenes background including the 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral and two highly-acclaimed specials, the critically-lauded “The True Story of Seabiscuit” and HBO’s First Look.
