Pirates Takes $19.5 Million in Rentals

Not only was Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl the Week 1 record-breaker for combined DVD and VHS sales, topping 11 million units sold through to consumers and rental chains, but Disney’s live-action swashbuckler earned $19.5 million during its first five days on rental shelves.

Meanwhile, Universal’s Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey, has maintained strong rental and DVD retail legs well into its second week in release on home video, maintaining the No. 3 slot on Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert DVD sales chart and taking the No. 5 position on VideoScan’s VHS sales chart for the week ending Dec. 7.

“Bruce” generated an estimated $17.71 million in rental revenue last week for a 12-day haul of $36.8 million.
