Labyrinth Finds Its Way to the Top

Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth took the top spot last week on the national DVD sales and rental charts during its first week in stores, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The New Line Home Entertainment release, an Oscar winner for art direction, cinematography and makeup, topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ending May 20.

“Labyrinth,” which earned $37.5 million in theaters, handily beat another new release with a significantly bigger box office take, Sony Pictures’ Stomp the Yard, a musical drama that grossed $61.4 million. “Stomp” debuted at No. 2 on the sales chart but mustered only an eighth-place finish on the rental chart with earnings of $4 million, compared with $6.5 million for Pan’s Labyrinth.

The only other new release of note was Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, which debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart and at No. 11 on the rental chart.

“Fountain” did become the top high-definition disc seller of the week, largely because of its simultaneous release on both the Blu-ray Disc and the HD DVD format.
