Thriller C-drama Frozen Surface, featuring Chen Jianbin as the reputed police captain Guan Yu, has released its first three episodes. The episodes came out on January 10, 2024. This Zang Xi Chuan-directed drama follows the genre of mystery/thriller. Frozen Surface tells the story of captain Guan Yu of the Lanhe County Criminal Police Department as he solves mysterious cases. Guan Yu is wise, experienced, and well-respected within the police force.
The first episode of Frozen Surface takes place in 2005. Viewers get to meet the newly appointed police captain, Guan Yu. From the very beginning, he makes the viewers aware of his tough and rebellious nature. He isn’t afraid to call out news reporters when they try to spread misinformation about him being married. He then gets a call about some mysterious deaths that have taken place, and he rushes to the crime scene.
The scene of the crime is Hongqiao residency. Mr. Hongqiao, a very rich and influential man in the Lanhe country, was found dead along with his wife. Mr. Hongqiao was lying dead in the hallway while his wife had jumped to her doom from the window. Guan Yu and his team start to examine the crime scene and look for clues. Here, viewers get to witness Guan Yu’s sharp mind. When he observes the scene, the crime starts to unfold before his eyes. Thus, he is able to come up with several possibilities. Meanwhile, Mr. Hongqiao’s nephew arrives at the scene and tries to create a ruckus.
Unable to land on a decision, they decide to go back to the police station. During the meeting, several suspects’ names come up. The names included people who worked for the Hongqiao residency.
Frozen Surface Ep 1-3: Chen Jianbin deals with strange deaths
One of the main suspects is Ms. Wang Ping (Deng Jiajia). Ms. Ping, who is an influential figure and a philanthropist, divorced Mr. Hongqiao some time ago.
The police go to question her, but the beautiful lady is able to charm them with her soft nature. When they see how delicately she treats specially abled children, they are convinced otherwise. But it is quite evident to the viewers that she is hiding something.
The next suspect is Yang Si, a man who previously worked for the Hongqiao residency. Police received information that he was seen fleeing the Hongqiao house at the time of the crime.
The security bureau starts to look for Yang Si everywhere. After police get a tip that he is at the station trying to get out of Lanhe, they arrive at the scene. Guan Yu and his team trickily catch him. During the interrogation, Yang Si keeps denying his involvement in the case. But he admits to entering Mr. Hong’s house that night. He mentions that he had no place to go, and as the temperature dropped low, he entered the house, trying to look for a shelter.
He says that the crime had already been committed when he arrived. Yang found Mr. and Mrs. Hongqiao dead. Freaked out, he decided to flee from the spot. After hearing his side, Guan Yu releases him from custody. Will he be able to get to the bottom of this entangled scene?
