Does Ciel Die in Black Butler?

The story of Ciel Phantomhive’s death dates back to December 14, 1875, when he was born. It is little known that he was not born alone. He was born after his twin brother, Ciel. The elder Ciel was the succeeding Earl of the Phantomhive Manor until his destiny treated him unfairly, and he met his end. This article explores the tragic story of the Phantomhive twins, ultimately leading to the elder Ciel Phantomhive’s death in Black Butler.

Ciel Phantomhive’s death explained

When the twins turned ten, the day started well with their parents and Tanaka, the Phantomhive household’s senior staff, wishing them a happy birthday. However, the household butlers and cooks asked the twins to leave the kitchen and wait for their surprise cake.

As such, the twins played around until the party and eventually fell asleep in their room. They woke up to find no one around. The elder Ciel anxiously probed around the Phantomhive Manor and found his parents dead.

The younger twin saw Tanaka, who asked him to escape. However, within a few moments, an attacker stabbed Tanaka and abducted the twins. The assailant sold the two of them to a suspicious buyer.

When the younger Ciel was treated nicely by the buyer, he was easily convinced of his good intentions, but the elder twin remained suspicious. Unfortunately, true to the latter’s suspicion, the buyer took them to a cathedral, where they were deemed scapegoats.

Consequently, the cultists violated, defiled, and abused the two brothers with no apparent remorse. The abusive days ended with a final tragedy where the cultists put the elder Ciel on a table and stabbed him to death.

The convened cultists finished the ritual, but the younger twin, who helplessly saw his brother getting murdered, summoned a demon. Sebastian Michaelis, the demon, formed a contract with Ciel and killed the cultists.

Since the elder Ciel Phantomhive had already died, Sebastian and the younger Ciel set the cathedral on fire and fled the scene. However, Undertaker, the grim reaper, retrieved the dying Ciel only to convert him into a Bizarre Doll.
