Golden Globes 2024 Winners: The Boy and the Heron Bags Top Honor

Fans’ beloved Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron, recently received the award for Best Animated Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony. Particularly, Hayao Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed movie secured the title for Best Motion Picture in the Animated category. The film faced fierce competition from remarkable titles, such as Suzume and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Hence, it is safe to say that The Boy and Heron witnessed a glorious moment at the Golden Globes 2024. 

The Boy and the Heron, released on July 14, 2023, in Japan, rose to global fame with overwhelming success within a short period of time. It sold over a million tickets in the first three days of its premiere in Japan, earning approximately $13.2 million. It did not just win accolades and praise from critics and audiences but also ranked 71 among the highest-grossing films of all time in Japan. The film also made noise in the U.S. entertainment market. In fact, the movie turns out to be the first anime production to leave other titles behind in the U.S. Box Office.

The Boy and The Heron: Awards and nominations

Other than its recent success at the Golden Globes, The Boy and the Heron previously received the prestigious title of Best Picture Award at the Florida Film Critics Circle. Moreover, it triumphed as the Best Animated Film at the New York Film Critics Circle. Additionally, the film boasts winning the Best Animated Film and Best Score at Florida Film Critics Circle, and Best Animated Film at the Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ EDA Awards event. The film also received the Best Animated Award at the LA Film Critics Association Awards, and the Best Animated Film Award at the Boston Society of Film Critics, among other prestigious honors. All of these combined, marks the global fame that the film has risen to in a short span. 

Furthermore, its director, Hayao Miyazaki, has been nominated as the Best International Film-maker at the Astra Film & Creative Arts Awards. Miyazaki, along with directing the film, worked on its script, stunning its audiences as per usual. With such dedication to keep up with Studio Ghibli’s reputation, the film’s success has been inevitable all along.
